Piccini 1882

Face to face with Michelangelo Piccini

The Piccini winery’s passion for wine began in 1882 with Angiolo Piccini and has been handed down from generation to generation ever since. The family has always combined love for the land and respect for tradition while anticipating the challenges of the future. With international growth and the acquisition of five estates in various Italian regions, Piccini has created a deep connection with the land. “Wine in Music” represents the perfect marriage of art, music and wine, reflecting the fusion of tradition and innovation that characterizes the winery.

How does your winery’s passion and commitment to winemaking come about?

The passion for wine has been running through our family’s veins for five generations. It all began in 1882, when Angiolo Piccini founded the winery in the town of Poggibonsi. Since then, love for the land and respect for tradition have gone hand in hand with a desire to scrutinize and anticipate the future. From generation to generation the company has never stopped thriving, even during the darkest and bleakest years of the 20th century. Since 1984, with its move to Castellina in Chianti, Piccini has enjoyed exponential growth, to the point of successfully expanding into major international markets. The momentum does not stop, and as of today, in 2020, our wines are looking good on the shelves of more than 85 countries. Throughout its century-long history, the winery has steadily invested in new properties, so that today no fewer than five estates have joined the Piccini ranks. Each of them represents an Italian wine-making excellence: Chianti Classico, Montalcino, Maremma, Vulture and Etna.

An anecdote that always brings a smile to my face concerns an episode from many years ago that occurred at Poggio Teo, one of the most iconic vineyards of our Valiano estate in Chianti Classico. I had snuck away that day to admire the ripening of the grapes, but such was the emphasis in my legs that I stumbled. In an attempt to catch myself again, my father lost his balance and tumbled to the ground, causing my grandfather to tumble in turn.

Which wine represents you the most, and why?

The wine I carry in my heart is undoubtedly Wine in Music. In it, painting, music, and wine come together to create a combination that celebrates art in all aspects. Born from a collaboration with the genius of artist Giuseppe Chiari, Vino in Musica enhances the sensitive and elegant soul of my grandfather.

Our winery strikes a perfect balance between an unwavering commitment to preserving tradition and a focus on innovation. Our wines encapsulate the essence of the land where they were born, indulging the company’s credo of “one grape variety – one territory.” While respecting the past, our wineries open the door to contemporaneity through the use of organic farming and new winemaking techniques that allow us to express all the quality of the territory in the bottle.
